The question has arisen how the name The Popocatépetl arose. It will be fascinating to see what new meanings arrive in New York. It all depends how the Mexican community defines it.

The two volcanoes, the Popocatépetl (the smoking mountain) and the Iztaíhuatl (the sleeping women) are symbols of Mexican nationality. It is enough to name either of them to make Mexicans remember their heritage, home landscapes, and their history, past and present.

Both Popocatépetl and the Iztaíhuatl have snow covered peaks, which have been witnesses to the lives of the people in their surrounding communities. The Popocatépetl is an active volcano as are of Mexicans here and abroad. They both have unknown strength within them. No one knows its magnitude and force. It has yet to be seen how Mexicans will develop as a community in New York City.

The Popocatépetl has not only has witness the lives of Mexicans now residing in New York, but also their parents and grandparents. The Popocatépetl will now be witness to the world, struggles and successes of the Mexican Community in New York to themselves present as a united community. As united Community Mexicans would like make their own lives, history, and continue their traditions.

Mexicans are a migrating people, people of God. Each time we encounter new realities, situations, cultures, we will develop as a community and culture.
