Thousands turned out for the Cinco de Mayo parade in Manhattan Sunday.

They enjoyed vibrant music as marchers in colorful costumes and floats made their way down Central Park West.

Cinco de Mayo celebrates Mexico's defeat of the French army's invasion in 1862.

"This is a very important message to the rest of the world that Mexico fought for independence and the dignity of the people of Mexico," said Carlos Sada, the consul general of Mexico in New York City.

I'm enjoying it very much, I'm having a good time," said one onlooker.

Oh it feels great, Happy Cinco de Mayo to all the Mexicans," said another.

The parade, which was hosted by Tepeyac Association, also raised money for Latino students for college.
