MONTGOMERY -- A torch run that began in Mexico City paused in Montgomery on Saturday.

Runners participating in the Guadalupan Torch Run stopped late Saturday at Our Lady of Mercy Church, 4421 Narrow Lane Road. They were to depart for Birmingham early today.

The run is part of an ancestral Mexican religious tradition of bringing a torch from the Mother Sanctuary of Our Lady of Guadalupe to 36 U.S. cities where Mexican and other Hispanic immigrants live.

Mexican youths began a 45-day pilgrimage from the Basilica of Guadalupe in Mexico City on Oct. 29.
