Downtown Church Hosts Mexican Torch Bearers 2003-11-10 Wilson County News
San Antonio--Officials of Immaculate Heart of Mary Catholic Church announced today that they have been selected to receive and host a group of torch bearers arriving from Mexico City. The group is expected to arrive at Immaculate Heart of Mary Catholic Church, 617 South Santa Rosa Blvd. on Monday, November 10, 2003 at 5:00 p.m. The runners are on their way to New York City carrying a message of hope for all immigrants in New York and elsewhere in the United States. The runners are seeking attention to the plight and problems faced by immigrants of this country, particularly those of Mexican decent. The Carrera Antorcha Guadalupana began its journey across North America starting at the Basilica of Our Lady of Guadalupe in Mexico City on October 12, 2003. Their destination is St. Patrick’s Cathedral in New York City, arriving there on December 12, 2003. When the runners arrive they will be received, have dinner in private, and will attend a bilingual liturgy at 7:00 p.m. Guest speakers will be on hand to address issues on immigration. The runners will be housed at the church over night and they will depart at 7:00 a.m., Tuesday, November 11, 2003. The Asociacion Tepeyac de New York, sponsors of the Carrera Antorcha Guadalupana, have targeted immigration as the most urgent need that must be addressed in the United States and Mexico. Because of the present immigration reality families have been separated from each other, thousands have died in the deserts along the borders and undocumented immigrants are being exploited and forced to work under terrible working conditions. Locally, the event is being co-sponsored by the Immaculate Heart of Mary Catholic Church and the Office of Social Concerns of the Archdiocese of San Antonio. For more information regarding the run
