English as a Second Language Program

Tepeyac provides English classes at all levels to both its members and people from the community. The mission of the English Program is to equip immigrants with the English skills they need to navigate in New York and to facilitate classroom environments that promote leadership and organizing skills in addition to English competency. This mission mirrors the mission of Asociación Tepeyac that is to empower immigrants by educating and informing them of their rights and resources. The English Program is currently creating a curriculum that in addition to grammar, vocabulary, speaking, listening, reading, and writing skills, strives to address situations and topics relevant to the immigrant community served by Asociación Tepeyac. The English Programs applies participatory teaching methods and popular education approaches in its classes in following with its goal to promote the development of leaders and organizations in the immigrant community. Volunteer English teachers are the backbone of the English Program which has one staff coordinator. There is a high demand for English classes among the members of Tepeyac and among the extensive network of Mexican and Latino immigrants that are connected to the organization. English classes are also a component of the World Trade Center Unemployed Program.

The English Program seeks Volunteer English Teachers who can teach 3-4 hours a week at locations in Brooklyn, the Bronx, Queens, Harlem, Staten Island and in our offices on 14th Street in Manhattan.
